The Australian Conservation Foundation’s (ACF) Just Add Water initiative, aimed to raise enough money to purchase 200 million litres of water for Hattah. But the response from the public was so big that within two weeks ACF doubled its target.
When ACF consulted their membership about contributing to the project, the response was notably in favour of members being able to see the results of their efforts.
The ACF teamed up with Observant and Telstra to develop a monitoring system that could track the progress of the water delivery, and easily make it available to visitors of the ACF campaign website
The system is comprised of three Observant C2 units, each equipped with a new Observant V1 camera.
The cameras are set up to capture two images per day, and will track the progress of the water as it gradually flows down the Chalker Creek, in to Lake Mournpall and then to Lake Yelwell.
In addition to the images, the system also records the level of water in the creek and helps monitor the water being pumped from the Murray River.
The pumping system uses an Observant M1 engine controller and connects to a MACE AgriFlo meter to record hourly and daily total water flow.
All the information captured by the three C2 units is tramitted wirelessly to the Observant Managed Services across Telstra’s Next G™ network.
Using Observant’s simple content syndication system, all of this information can be easily incorporated in the the ACF website with a few lines of HTML code.
Boolungal Creek Water Level
The graph below is the historical recording of the water level in the creek at Boolungal Crossing. An Observant L1 water level sensor is used to record the level. This information is gathered and stored automatically using the Observant Managed Services. From there, the data is easily accessible, and can be embedded in any web page with a simple script.

The latest image from each of the three camera sites is easily incorporated in to this page with a single line of embedded HTML code.
